Parents’ Feelings

It’s natural for parents to experience moments of “childsickness” when their son or daughter is at Camp. It’s not always easy to spend a few weeks apart, especially if it’s the first time that your child has been away from home.

Parents often find the following steps helpful in reducing their own level of stress:

  • Encourage your child to do something that they enjoy. When they’re having fun, they are less likely to spend time thinking about people and things that they miss.
  • Talk with other Camp parents. We have a wonderful community of caring Camp parents who are ready, willing and able to answer your questions and offer support.
  • Write to your camper often. There is nothing better than finding postcards, letters or even an e-mail from home.

Children take cues from their parents on how to feel, especially when faced with new challenges. Be conscious of this impact. They will sense if you are nervous, and that will make it harder for them to feel good about leaving for a few weeks. Try your best to avoid expressing mixed feelings about Camp or their being away.
