Jessica Margolin was a first-year counselor when she wrote this, after having been a camper at WK for a number of years. She comes from Greenwich, Connecticut and attended Dartmouth College. At camp that summer, she lived with younger girls and taught swimming and boating.

The Campers
"During the story at a campfire this summer, one of my campers crawled on to my lap. For a second, I wanted to cry. All I could think of was that I used to be that little camper. I realized I had become the type of counselor I had idolized when I was younger. It was the greatest feeling to see how much the campers looked up to me. I can remember wanting to dress exactly like my counselors dressed. I loved to borrow their clothes, and to do all of the things they loved to do... The campers are great. Most of them have either brothers, sisters, cousins or friends at camp who have been there for a number of years. They quickly become close to you."

The Daily Program
"One of the greatest ideas behind Wingate Kirkland is that the campers get to decide what periods they will take They are not obligated to participate in certain types of activities. Usually, there are kids who end up taking at least one period with you every day. Some campers will choose your periods because they like what you are offering. Others will just come because they like you, or because they want to take a period with their friends. Deciding what periods to offer is not as difficult as it seems. At the beginning of the summer, you worry about not having enough periods to offer. By the end of camp, you worry about not having enough time to offer all the periods you want to offer. Counselors work together to offer periods that campers will really like. I have as great a time teaching my periods as my campers do taking them."

Staff Orientation
"Staff week really helped me gain close relationships with the other counselors before the campers came. By the end of that first week, I felt like I had a huge support system to help me if I had a problem. But, I did not actually have many problems."
