Why Work at WK?
Wingate Kirkland has been the best part of my life for ten years. I could
go on and on about how the people are nice, and the activities are fun, and
the food is great. But overall, the eight weeks that I spend every year in
Cape Cod are the happiest times in my life.
On top of working with kids, and being a role model, and working with other
people -- all the benefits of being a counselor; when I am at camp, I feel
closer to myself than anywhere else.
At camp there is no pretending of who you are...
At camp there is no trying to be someone else...
At camp the real you shines...
You don't have to make first impressions because after eight weeks of living
in a small community there are no secrets, no false faces, no hidden
qualities. The positive and negatives of every single person are on the
playing field.
And this is why camp is one of the few places and times in life where the
game is played fairly.
When you don't have to worry about what other people think, or are going to
say, and when there are no strict rules, or regulations. Everyday life
becomes a learning experience. Not only do you learn about others, but you
learn about yourself. One week at camp teaches me more about life than an
entire year at school. I cherish every moment at camp and hope that it
never ends.
Being a counselor at camp is not a job by any means. Sure you work hard,
but that is relatively speaking. I consider writing a ten page paper, or
entering data into a computer for 8 hours a day working hard ... Not once in
my life have I ever considered swimming, playing tennis, hanging out,
relaxing, and being around great people in a beautiful setting hard work. I
would pay to be a counselor if that was the only way that I could come back
to camp.
My favorite place in the world is lying on the suprisingly comfortable wood
docks on a sunny, warm afternoon on Elisha's pond. There is no way that
anyone could wipe the smile off my face or take away my peace of mind.
