Homesickness is completely natural and it happens universally to all age groups. It is especially common in youth on their first day of school, or more specifically in this case, when going to Camp for the first time. Here are a few things you can do (or not do) to ease the transition:
- Please refrain from telling your child that she/he can come home if Camp isn’t going well for her/him.
- Please refrain from telling your child that she/he doesn’t have to participate in activities if she or he doesn’t want to.
- Have your child bring something that reminds her/him of home. Pack photos, letters or a favorite stuffed animal, sleep shirt, or pillow. When your child starts longing for familiar faces and places, they’ll have a little bit of home right there at Camp.
- Create a telephone schedule. You might want to arrange a time to call so you’ll have something to look forward to. If you have any questions about this, please contact the Camp office.
